Using Long Balls when the Game is Congested in the Middle
This complex tactic game helps the players to learn and practise the attacks by long balls when the game is extremely congested in midfield, so cannot play through this zone and the defenders get time on the ball and there are loads of space in behind the opposition.
Organisation
Two teams are identified with different colours (red and blue).
The red team play in 4-3-3, the blue is in 4-2-3-1 formation, so the players are located according to the given system and formation. Of course, the game works in other systems and formations, too.
There's an offensive, a middle and a defensive zone, besides both teams have a defending line.
There are determined rules during the game:
- When the team is in possession, the center backs can play in the defensive zone, the full backs, the midfielders and the attackers can act in the middle zone. However, at the time of the long, aerial ball, the attackers and one or two other players (full backs, midfielders) can run into the offensive zone to create overnumbered situations against the defenders.
- During the possession the center backs combine with each other in width and they can also play the full backs or the midfielders by a deep pass in the middle zone, however in this case they must get the ball back, since the attackers can be only played in the offensive zone by aerial ball of the center backs from behind.
- While defending, all the team is in the middle zone. The players can tackle and intercept the ball here. At the time of the lofted pass only the defenders can run into the defensive zone, but they only try to stop the opponent's player in possession or intercept the ball to the defending line, so they can't step over that.
- There's off-side rule.
The rules are taken to help the attacking team in practice.
If it's necessary it can be determined for the defenders when they can retire or move out and try to place the attackers off-side at the time of the lofted pass.
Description and Graphics
The main objective of the team in possession is to kick a lofted ball behind the opponents' defending line or play the attackers by a long, aerial ball. In this kind of attacking style, the switchover and collecting of the cleared balls by the opponent's defenders are key factors. Midfielders must concentrate, move behind the attackers and anticipate the situations.
In the defensive phase the attackers and the midfielders in the middle zone are shifting, closing the deep passing channels and attack the player in possession, when the ball is passed from back into the area.
The defenders mark the opponents, shift in width and depth, take care of the situation of the ball and prepare to react and intercept the long, aerial balls.
